About Maveli
The Myth of Onam & King Mahabali
An epic tale of a king's promise and his eternal return, celebrated by the Malayalee community in Vienna.
The Benevolent King Mahabali
Once upon a time, in the golden era of Kerala, there was a mighty Asura king named Mahabali, or Maveli. Known for his unparalleled generosity, his kingdom flourished under his just rule. Peace and prosperity spread throughout the land, and his people adored him. But his fame reached the heavens, causing the gods to worry about his rising power.
The Arrival of Vamana
The gods, feeling threatened, sought Lord Vishnu's help. Vishnu incarnated as a small Brahmin boy named Vamana. During the grand festival Mahabali held, Vamana approached him and humbly asked for a boon: three paces of land. True to his nature, Mahabali granted his wish. But little did he know, Vamana was no ordinary boy. As soon as Mahabali agreed, Vamana began to grow in size, towering over the world.
A Thriller Twist: The King’s Oath
With his first step, Vamana covered the earth. With his second, he spanned the skies. Mahabali, now realizing he had been tricked, bowed his head in surrender. But even in his defeat, the king's heart remained with his people. Before being pushed to the netherworld, Mahabali made one final request: to return once a year to see his beloved kingdom. Vamana, pleased with Mahabali’s humility, granted this wish.
Every year, during the festival of Onam, King Mahabali returns from the underworld to visit Kerala, where he is welcomed with joy and celebration. The Malayalee community in Vienna celebrates this tradition annually with great enthusiasm.
